Found my credit card info for sale on a dark web marketplace last month
I was just messing around on some random dark web directory after that big data breach news hit in February. Typed in my usual email hash out of curiosity and boom, there was my card number from 2021 with the CVV and everything. I freaked out and immediately froze all my cards through my bank's app while on the train downtown. Called the fraud department and they confirmed 3 small test charges had gone through already. It took 4 hours of phone calls and a new card number but now I check HaveIBeenPwned every month. Has anyone else actually found their own data for sale out there?

That "3 small test charges" part is exactly what got me... it's like they're checking if anyone's paying attention. But honestly, this whole thing just makes me notice how careless we've gotten as a society. I see people at the coffee shop typing their PINs out in the open, handing their cards over without watching, even reading out their full card numbers over the phone in public. We're so used to things working that we forget the system is held together with duct tape and hope. Credit monitoring feels like putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound when the real problem is that companies are hoarding our data like dragons.

Oh I actually saw that data breach list that was going around on Reddit last week with millions of card details from 2020-2021 and it made me sick. My friend's number was in there and she said the bank caught the test charges within 24 hours but still had to cancel everything. It's wild how these criminals just sit on data for YEARS before using it.
