My food delivery app was sharing my order patterns until I adjusted one setting
Turning off personalized ads in the account menu stopped it from sending my meal data to advertisers.

That exact setting is buried in three other apps I use too.

Actually, that's not really an accident. Those apps are probably hiding the advanced settings on purpose so the main screens look clean. Most people never change those options, so the designers bury them to avoid clutter. They figure the regular user just wants things to work without a bunch of menus. It kind of makes sense, even if it's annoying for people like us who actually go looking for them. Makes you wonder if there should be a simple "advanced mode" toggle, right?

Wasn't there a blog post last year arguing that hidden settings hurt power users? I heard a developer say they often add expert menus but forget to document them. @kim_ramirez3, that's probably why we're always digging around.

Wait, they actually forget to document them? That's wild. I always figured it was a design choice, but if devs are just adding stuff and not telling anyone, no wonder we can't find anything. Honestly feels kind of lazy.
