My kid's school app started tracking our location for a 'safety feature' and I lost it

I was at a park in Springfield last Tuesday when I got a push notification from the school district app saying 'Welcome to Lincoln Park, check in for the field trip?'. My daughter wasn't even with me, I was just grabbing lunch nearby. It turned out the app's new update had a hidden setting for 'family location services' that was on by default. How is this okay for a public school to do without clear, separate permission? What's the weirdest place a school or work app has tracked you without you knowing?

That's so creepy lol. My work app once logged me at a bar during a meeting I skipped. Guess the safety feature was for my boss.
