My sister asked me why I still use a flip phone in 2024

We were at a family dinner in Phoenix and she just couldn't get it. She said, 'You're not hiding anything, so what's the big deal?' It hit different because she's a teacher and her school just got those tracking apps on all the tablets. I tried to explain it's not about having secrets, it's about having a choice. Has anyone else had this talk with a family member who just doesn't see the point?

Actually, the original post said the tracking apps were on school tablets, not the teacher's personal phone. That's an important difference. It's about the school's property having that software, which is a whole other debate. Your point about choice still stands strong though. It's the feeling of being watched on a device you're told you have to use that gets under your skin. That lack of control is what makes people uneasy, even if they have nothing to hide.

Wait, her school put tracking apps on the tablets? That's the part that got me. It's one thing for a company to do it, but a school? Makes your flip phone look pretty smart, honestly. It really is about the choice, like you said. Once you give that up, it's hard to get back.

My old high school started a laptop program back in 2012. They insisted the monitoring software was just for security. A few years later, parents found out it could log keystrokes and take webcam photos. That kind of trust is almost impossible to rebuild once it's broken.

Ugh, that's the worst! My cousin's school tried that. Her parents had to sign a form to opt out, but they buried it in the back-to-school packet. Always check the fine print!
