Tried using a VPN on my public library's WiFi last Tuesday and got locked out of my own email
I was at the downtown branch in Austin using their free WiFi to check some stuff. Fired up my VPN app like I always do at coffee shops, but the library's system flagged it as suspicious traffic. Within 5 minutes, my Gmail session got cut off and I had to go to the front desk to prove I wasn't a bot. Has anyone else run into public WiFi blocks on VPNs and found a workaround that actually works?

Yeah but I see it different. Libraries are supposed to be a resource for the public, not a nanny. I run into this same issue at the Austin central branch and had to switch to using WireGuard protocol instead of OpenVPN. Most VPN apps let you swap protocols in the settings. Library firewalls seem to hate OpenVPN but leave WireGuard alone. Been using that trick for 6 months now, no lockouts.

WireGuard fixed my VPN issues at the library too, switched and never looked back.
