SSA office visit in Tucson made me lose hope

Went to the SSA office in Tucson last Tuesday to check on my appeal status from March. Waited 2 hours just to talk to someone. The lady at the window told me they have over 400 cases per worker right now. She said my file is still in the review pile with no estimated date. How are people supposed to survive a 1-2 year wait when they can't work? Has anyone else gotten a timeline from their local office?

Counter the idea that this is just about a long wait and consider if the system is actually designed to discourage people. A 400 case backlog is a deeper issue that suggests the process is broken, not that you should just be more patient. If the system is overwhelmed to that degree, it's not about attitude or side gigs, it's about people falling through the cracks.

Oh give me a break. 400 cases per worker? That number sounds like something they pulled out of thin air to get you to leave. Look, I've dealt with government offices before and they always say stuff like that to make themselves seem busier than they are. You waited 2 hours big deal I've waited 4 at the DMV and still got my license renewed. The fact that your file is in the review pile just means they haven't gotten to it yet which is normal for any appeal process. People survive by having savings or family help or getting a side gig under the table like everyone else does. I bet if you go back next week with a different attitude and some patience you'll find things are moving along just fine.

oh man, come on. you're really acting like waiting 2 hours is some kind of government trial. i've sat around for longer trying to get a refund from a cable company. people blow stuff out of proportion all the time. and that 400 cases number? yeah, sounds like a load of made up junk to make you feel bad for complaining. honestly, if you can't handle a little wait time and a pile of paperwork, maybe you should rethink your plan. survival ain't supposed to be easy, that's just how it goes.
