Dawn ruined my cast iron skillet at a cabin in Gatlinburg

I brought my trusty cast iron to a rental cabin in Gatlinburg last month and used the Dawn they had under the sink to clean it after breakfast. That stuff stripped the seasoning right off and left the pan looking rusty by lunchtime. Anyone else had a fancy dish soap mess up their cookware?

I left my cast iron skillet in a hotel kitchenette in Pigeon Forge last summer and the cleaning crew used dish soap on it. Came back to a pan with orange spots all over the surface and a weird film. I scrubbed it with salt and oil three times before it looked normal again. Did you boil water in that skillet after the Dawn situation? Sometimes that helps pull out the soap residue before you reseason it. Also what oil did you use for your initial seasoning batch?

Honestly I used to think a little dish soap was fine on cast iron because I'd heard modern soap is gentler. But after reading your story about the orange spots and film I totally changed my mind. That's way more damage than I realized, I'll stick to just salt and water scrubbing from now on.
