Debate: Did my air filter fail or did I install it backwards?

Last week I was testing my bunker's ventilation system, the one I built into the wall last fall. Everything was running fine for three months, then suddenly the air coming through felt dusty and stale. I pulled out the filter and it looked caked on one side but clean on the other. I followed the arrows on the frame, but now I'm wondering if the arrow was pointing the right direction or if the filter was meant to face the other way. Some folks online say as long as air moves through it, direction doesn't matter for basic fallout filters. But my buddy in Tulsa swears the filter life drops by half if you flip it wrong. Has anyone else seen a filter fail like this and figured out if the arrow really matters for basement setups?

You mentioned "that cheap box filters especially will collapse" and I think that's part of it, but nobody's talking about how the gasket seal can get crushed if the arrow is facing the wrong way... I had that happen once and it let unfiltered air slip right around the edges even though the filter itself looked fine. It's not just about the filter media but also how it seats against the frame.

Wait, did @the_wade actually say the arrow on the filter is about airflow direction though? I always thought that arrow was just telling you which side faces the furnace, not which way the air flows through the media. I've definitely screwed it up before too and had the same problem with air sneaking around the sides like you said. But honestly, it's more about making sure the gasket isn't pinched or wrinkled when you slide it in, cause even with the arrow right, a bad seat will wreck it. The arrow is more like a suggestion than a rule, at least in my experience lol.

The arrow matters more than people give it credit for. Those cheap box filters especially will collapse and let everything through if you put them in backwards. Try flipping it around and see if the next one lasts longer, that's what fixed mine.
