Had a close call at an old silo near Joplin last fall

I was checking out this abandoned missile silo in Missouri that I thought was totally sealed. Turns out the ventilation shaft had a crack in it that I didn't see until I was already 15 feet down. Now I always bring a portable gas meter and a buddy before I go underground. Anyone else ever find unexpected damage in a shelter they thought was solid?

You ever had one of those moments where you're standing there and realize you just made a really stupid decision? I was exploring this old fallout shelter in Kansas a few years back, the kind that was supposedly "government certified" and all that. They said the concrete was 12 feet thick and bomb proof, but I found a crack in the floor that went straight down into some sort of tunnel system I never even knew was there. Didn't have a rope or nothing with me that day, just a flashlight and a bad feeling in my gut...

Oh geez, that's the kind of thing where you look back and wonder if you had a death wish that day. So you found a crack in a bomb shelter floor that leads into who knows what, and your first thought was "let me just poke my flashlight down there and see what happens"? Might as well have brought a sandwich and a sleeping bag while you were at it. I mean, worst case scenario you fall into some bottomless pit, best case you find a nest of angry raccoons that haven't seen sunlight in 50 years. But hey, at least you didn't bring a rope so you couldn't get back out if you fell in. That's some real pro-level survival thinking right there.

No kidding, that's a hard lesson right there.
