My air intake filter got clogged with mouse nests twice last winter
I was testing the ventilation in my basement shelter near Omaha and the CO2 monitor shot up to 2,000 ppm after 45 minutes. Turns out mice had packed insulation and nesting material into the intake pipe. Has anyone figured out a good screen or grate that keeps critters out without restricting airflow too much?

Yeah that's the same kind of problem I've been seeing everywhere lately, seems like mice are figuring out every little gap and pipe we leave open like it's their own personal highway system. You end up blocking one spot and they just find another way in right behind it.

Oh man, I heard from a prepper forum that someone had good luck with those heavy-duty stainless steel mesh sheets you can get at hardware stores. They cut it to size and zip-tied it over the intake, said it stopped mice but airflow was still fine. Your mileage may vary on the exact size holes though.

Fully expecting my DIY mesh job to look like a blindfolded raccoon did it.
