Caught my dad using a pasta strainer to sift gravel for the driveway
He swore it was faster than the proper sieve. Now I can't look at spaghetti the same way.

Oh man, that mental image is just too good... I bet that colander will never be the same. Next time you have spaghetti, just pretend it's fancy driveway gravel. Hope he at least washed it before mom tried to make dinner.

Doubt it was that big of a deal in the end. It's just some dirt and maybe a little oil, not poison. A good scrub with soap and hot water fixes most things. People act like household items are ruined forever over nothing. It's a metal strainer, not a fancy plate. Bet it was fine for pasta by that night.

Ugh, no way, that's actually kind of gross. Gravel has all kinds of dirt and grime and who knows what else in it. I'm with @jakeb81 that soap and water fixes a lot, but oil and fine dust can get stuck in those little holes. I'd always be wondering if my pasta tasted like driveway, even after a wash. Some tools just shouldn't cross over from the garage to the kitchen.

Support your dad's genius move for using what works. That metal colander got cleaned and works fine for food now. People get too hung up on stuff being single-use when real life isn't that neat.
