My painted floorboards bubbled up overnight and I'm not sure why
I sanded my old pine floor in the den and put down a coat of water-based polyurethane from a brand called SafeCoat. Woke up this morning and there are these weird raised bubbles all over, like the wood is breathing. My buddy says I should've used an oil-based sealer first, but the can said it was fine for raw wood. Has anyone else had this happen with a water-based finish on pine?

That water based stuff can be tricky on softwoods like pine. It dries too fast and traps moisture from the wood underneath, which causes those bubbles. Your buddy is right about an oil based sealer. It soaks in deeper and slows the whole process down, letting the wood gases escape without messing up the top coat. The can might say it's fine, but pine is full of sap and moisture that needs a different approach. Seen it bubble up like that a dozen times.

My neighbor had the same thing happen with pine and a water-based finish last year.

Ugh, that's the worst. It's like everything these days is sold as a one-size-fits-all solution, but the fine print always gets you. You see it with paint, with cleaners, with that quick-dry stuff. The can says it works on anything, but real world materials like old pine have their own rules. It feels like we're all just beta testing products in our own homes now.
