PSA: I was putting up shelves wrong for years and didn't know it

I was hanging a set of three shelves in my bedroom last week, using the same plastic anchors I always buy. My partner watched me drill the first hole and said, 'That wall sounds hollow right there.' I tapped it and realized I was drilling into drywall with no stud behind it, even though the stud finder had beeped. I was just trusting the tool without double checking. Turns out my old stud finder picks up on old pipe runs and gives false readings. Has anyone else had a tool just lie to them like that?

My friend's level swore a wall was straight. It was not.

Blame the wall, not the tool.

Oh man, I read a whole forum thread about this. A bunch of people said the cheap magnetic stud finders are way more reliable for finding nails in actual studs, because they won't be fooled by pipes or wires. Those electronic ones seem to get confused so easily.
