Serious question, is it better to rent a floor sander or just pay a pro after my disaster in Phoenix?
I tried to refinish my oak floors myself last spring and the rental sander left deep gouges I'm still fixing. My neighbor says pros have better tools, but I hate giving up on a project.

You said you hate giving up on a project, but sometimes quitting is the smart move. Those rental sanders are brutal and it's so easy to mess up expensive floors. A pro with the right gear can fix your gouges and get it done in a day, not a year. You already learned it's harder than it looks, so save yourself the headache and just call someone.

@gibson.morgan makes a good point about the rental sanders. How bad are the gouges you've already put in the floor?

The rental guy said it was a beginner model... I've got one spot that looks like a small animal tried to dig its way out.

Take a good look at those gouges and ask yourself if you're willing to spend the next few weekends sanding and refinishing to fix them. Sometimes the smartest thing is to just cut your losses.
