TIL I was wrong about using spackle for a big drywall gap
My contractor buddy in Denver laughed and said to use setting compound instead, and it dried rock solid in 90 minutes. Anyone have a favorite brand for patches over an inch wide?

Man, that 90 minute stuff is a game changer for sure. Had a huge gap around an old outlet box last year and regular spackle just sagged right out. Switched to a setting-type joint compound, the powder you mix yourself, and it was hard as a rock by lunch. @calebc40 is totally right about the crumbly cheese thing if you use the wrong stuff. That quick dry time means you can sand and get a second coat on the same day, which saved my project.

Wait, it dried in 90 minutes? That's crazy fast... I tried spackle on a gap once and it was still soft the next day. Had to scrape the whole mess out. Your buddy wasn't kidding about it being rock solid.

My buddy learned that "rock solid" lesson the hard way when his patch crumbled like old cheese.
