My dad swore by duct tape on broken vacuum hoses - tried electrical tape instead, lost suction in 10 minutes

I figured duct tape was overkill so I used electrical tape on my shop vac hose crack, and it just peeled right off on the first bend. Has anyone else learned the hard way that some fixes really do need the specific stuff?

Read somewhere that vacuum hose tape is basically a different beast. Electrical tape just isn't made for that kind of flexing and heat.

Actually the heat rating on 3M Super 88 is 220 degrees, same as most hose tapes.

Oh boy, I've definitely used electrical tape where I shouldn't have and learned the hard way what happens when it gets too warm. Makes me realize I need to read the fine print before I just grab whatever's in the drawer.
