Warning: I was sure duct tape could fix my cracked toilet tank but it leaked again in 3 days

My toilet tank got a hairline crack last month and I figured a few layers of duct tape would hold it. I wrapped it tight, let it sit for a day, and it held water for about 72 hours before dripping down the side again. After that fail I tried plumber's epoxy from an old tube in my garage and it's been dry for two weeks now. So is duct tape just overrated for any wet job, or did I use the wrong brand? Anyone else had better luck with tape on plumbing?

Duct tape is just not made for water pressure situations like that. It works fine for dryer stuff or holding a tarp but plumbing needs a real seal. The plumber's epoxy you used is a much better call because it actually bonds to the ceramic. I tried tape on a pipe once and it peeled off like nothing after a day.

Oh man absolutely, that’s exactly what happened to me too. I tried duct tape on a little leak under my bathroom sink once, thought it would be a quick fix, and it literally started dripping again within a couple hours. The tape just kind of slid off once the water got behind it, didn’t stick at all. I ended up having to use this waterproof epoxy paste stuff, and it’s been holding strong for like six months now. Idk why duct tape even gets recommended for plumbing, it’s just not built for that kind of constant pressure. The plumber’s epoxy is honestly the only thing I’d trust for ceramic or porcelain now.

Read some article that said duct tape fails on wet surfaces almost every time lol.
