Saw a guy at the hardware store buy 50 feet of gutter guard for his rain barrels and it hit me why my system keeps clogging
He said he spent $12 on it and now his filters stay clean through the whole rainy season, so I'm grabbing some this weekend after pulling sludge out of my downspout diverter for the third time in 2 months, anybody else skip this step and regret it?

Wait so he's using gutter guard specifically on the rain barrel intake or just on the downspout? I'm wondering if it's worth doing that instead of just cleaning the diverter more often.

Honestly most of the stuff we do around the house is just moving the problem to a different spot lol. I tried the gutter guard on my downspout last year and it just made the leaves pile up on top so now I'm cleaning the roof instead. Pick your poison I guess.

I used to think gutter guard on the intake was overkill but honestly seeing how quick the diverter clogs changed my mind lol. Might be worth trying just on the downspout first to see if it cuts down on cleaning.
