Swapped my plastic water barrels for IBC totes last spring, huge difference
I used to run six 55 gallon blue barrels daisy chained together to catch roof runoff. After 4 years of fighting leaks at the connections and algae growing in the clear hoses, I grabbed a used 275 gallon IBC tote for 40 bucks off Facebook Marketplace. Now I just have one tank with a screened top, way less maintenance and no more wrestling with those tiny barrel openings. Anyone else switch to a bigger single tank and regret it or love it?

Yeah but "way less maintenance" really depends on your setup. I tried the big single tank route and ended up hating how hard it was to clean when sediment built up on the bottom. Give me multiple barrels any day where I can drain and scrub each one individually without losing my whole water supply.

You ever notice how that pattern shows up everywhere though? Like with tools or even in the kitchen, you either go with one big heavy duty thing or a bunch of smaller ones that you can manage piece by piece. I went with a single 500 gallon tank a couple years ago after fighting with barrels and honestly I'll never go back. Yeah cleaning is a pain but I just stick a submersible pump in there once a year and pump out the bottom sludge into the garden. The thing about multiple barrels is you're trading one kind of headache for another all those connections and hoses are just more places for something to go wrong. Its kind of like having one big shop vac instead of three little ones. You lose some flexibility but gain so much simplicity.
