The week I taught GED math in block 3 and it actually clicked for 4 guys

Last month I volunteered inside our county jail on a Wednesday. I sat with this guy Marcus who could not do fractions at all. I used candy bars from the vending machine to show him halves and quarters. By Friday he finished a whole practice worksheet without help. Has anyone else found a weird prop that helped teach something in a tough setting?

@kai_webb91 sounds like someone never got to eat the candy bar after the lesson.

Doubt it's that deep. Candy bars work for like 5 minutes until someone gets mad they can't actually eat the math lesson. Real life ain't a chocolate commercial.

The candy bar thing worked for about ten minutes before Marcus asked if he could eat the worksheet after he finished it. I told him no and he gave me this look like I'd personally invented the prison system. I had to explain that the candy was just a visual aid and he said "so you brought food in here just to tease us." I felt like a real jerk. Next time I'm using dry erase markers and drawing circles on the board instead. Less tasty but also less likely to make enemies.
