Learned the hard way about sign paint bleeding in the rain

Was at a rally last Saturday in Portland. Made my sign with coroplast and acrylic paint like always. Looked great until 20 minutes in when the drizzle started. The red letters bled all down the white background. Turned into a mess. Nobody could read it. Talked to a guy nearby who uses exterior latex paint and said it holds up way better. Ever had your signs ruined by weather?

Actually the exterior latex thing mostly works but you gotta be careful with it too. I made signs for a climate march in Eugene last year and used the cheap Behr sample paint from Home Depot. Thought I was being smart but it still ran a little after like an hour of rain. The real trick is letting the paint cure for at least 24 hours before you take it outside. I dry my signs in my garage for a full day now. Also found out the hard way that coroplast has that waxy coating on the surface so you gotta scuff it a bit with sandpaper first or the paint just beads up and peels off anyway.

Nah, Behr's primer works better than scuffing for that waxy surface.

Haha yeah @gavin365, my buddy Mike made his sign too early, left it in his trunk for a week, and the rain turned it into a blurry mess.
