A guy at the supply house mentioned he still draws his first rough sketch on paper

I was picking up some new leads and overheard a drafter talking about his process. He said he always starts with a pencil and graph paper for the initial layout, even for complex 3D models. He told me, 'It lets me think through the problem with my hands before I ever open the software.' I've been jumping straight into CAD for so long, I never considered that. It made me try it on a tricky foundation plan last Thursday, and it really helped me spot a potential clearance issue early. Does anyone else still use paper for the first pass, or is that just an old-school thing now?

My old boss made me sketch a whole site plan on vellum first. It cut my CAD rework in half.

Read an article about how drawing by hand uses a different part of your brain. It forces you to slow down and see the whole picture, literally. That's probably why it catches those early mistakes.

What about the times you need to explain your idea to a client or a boss right there on the spot? I can't just boot up my laptop and start modeling. I grab a napkin or my notebook and sketch it out. That messy drawing gets them on the same page way faster than any polished CAD screen could. It becomes a conversation, not a presentation. The software comes later to build what we already agreed on.

Seen a guy sketch a house on a dinner napkin and get it built.
