Dropped $400 on a Trimble R1 and it paid for itself in a week
I bought a Trimble R1 GNSS receiver last month after fighting with old stakeout methods. First job with it saved me 3 hours on a channel alignment in the Delta. Anyone else spring for pricey gear that actually worked out?

Read a forum post last month where a utility locator said the R1 cut his field time by half. I borrowed a buddy's a couple weeks ago on a small subdivision layout and honestly it was scary how fast it locked onto satellites compared to my old setup. Probably would've taken me three days with tape and a level, finished it in one morning. That kind of return on investment is rare in this industry, most gear just collects dust.

Had a buddy rent one for a highway staking job and he said the same thing about satellite lock. He called it "cheating" but he's already saving up to buy his own.

Borrowed my buddy's R1 for a weekend fence layout and spent half the time messing with the battery settings before I figured out you gotta keep bluetooth off unless you're actually transferring data.

Borrowed one from a coworker before buying and honestly the time savings alone makes it worth it. We were laying out a school parking lot expansion and I had all the control points dialed in within an hour. What nobody mentions though is how much battery it eats if you leave bluetooth on all day, learned that one the hard way.
