Had to choose between a new pump or a full rebuild on the old one
The main pump on our 12-inch cutterhead started losing pressure near the end of a channel job in Mobile. Boss gave me the call: either drop $22k on a brand new unit from Thompson, or try a full rebuild kit for about a third of that. Went with the rebuild to save budget, but it took our crew two full days longer than quoted to get it all back together and dialed in. Anyone have a go-to shop for pump rebuilds that doesn't take a week?

That $22k new Thompson pump would have been on a truck the next day. You lost two full days of crew wages and machine downtime, which probably ate most of that savings. A new unit comes with a warranty and no surprises.

My old foreman always said a cheap fix costs twice as much once the machine stops again.

Yeah that rebuild gamble is always tough. Found a place up in Birmingham that does emergency turnarounds, got our last one back in three days flat.
