Old timer in Galveston told me to always keep a spare impeller in the tool box

I was new on the job and thought he was just being extra careful. Then our main dredge pump lost suction on a Saturday afternoon 30 miles from the nearest parts house. That spare got us back running in under an hour instead of losing a whole day's work. Anyone else have a piece of gear they never thought they'd need that saved their butt?

Ever carry a spare for something that isn't even on your boat?

My bilge pump died last year and the replacement part was backordered for months. Now I keep a spare pump on board for a friend's boat, because he never remembers to buy his own. It's basically a floating loan program at this point.

My buddy's sailboat in Newport has a full spare parts locker for three other boats. Honestly it's gotten out of hand, he's storing anchors and spare sails for people who just don't want to buy their own gear. Tbh that's not being a good friend, it's enabling bad habits. If your friend's boat sinks because he was too lazy to get his own bilge pump, maybe he shouldn't own a boat.
