The day we hit a solid rock shelf just outside of Duluth.
It was a Tuesday morning, and the whole dredge shook like it was coming apart. We'd been pulling up soft silt for weeks, but the sonar missed a granite ledge. The cutter head made a sound I'll never forget, a grinding scream that meant a full day's work just turned into a week. We had to bring in a barge with a rock breaker, and the project manager was on the radio every hour asking about the delay. Anyone else ever have a job go from smooth to stopped in an instant like that?

A week's delay sounds rough but happens all the time. Not exactly a disaster.
