Thread count on dredge cable is way overrated

I keep hearing guys at the yard swear by high thread count wire rope for cutter suction dredges, but after 8 years on the Mississippi I found the cheaper 6x19 stuff holds up way better against that gritty sand we hit near Baton Rouge. Last month I swapped out a set of supposedly premium cables and they started fraying after just 40 hours, while my old spools ran double that easy. Anyone else see this or am I missing something with the fancy stuff?

Same pattern as cheap wrenches outlasting pricey sets in my garage.

@ivanbell Yeah that hits close to home. My cheap socket set is still kicking while the expensive one gave up first.
