Warning: A clogged pump taught me to oversize suction lines.
Now I pick hoses one size up to prevent shutdowns.

Learned that lesson the hard way with a slurry pump last year. Started using a suction hose one size bigger than the pump inlet, and it made a world of difference. The extra volume seems to give debris more room to move without getting stuck right at the entrance. Haven't had a single clog-related shutdown since making that change.

But what if that bigger hose is just hiding problems instead of fixing them? Slower flow from the bigger line can let heavier stuff drop out and build up in the hose itself, so you might just be moving the clog further back. You're also losing some of that suction pull at the inlet, which seems fine until you need to lift from a deeper spot and the pump struggles. Sometimes the standard size is that way for a reason, to keep the right speed and force through the system.

My old 3 inch pump setup was always choking on leaves until I tried that trick. Same idea, bigger hose lets the junk flow past instead of jamming. Really does work.

Totally get it. I had the same fight with my sump pump in the wet season. It was always grabbing little twigs and pine needles. Switched to a wider hose on the inlet side, just one size up, and it was like night and day. Stuff just floats on through now instead of catching right at the pump mouth. I was skeptical but it just works.
