Just spent 3 hours trying to match a 10-foot cathedral ceiling texture from a 1978 repair patch.
The original mud had some weird plaster mix in it, and my spray gun kept clogging until I thinned it with a bit of water and vinegar, so has anyone else had to deal with a mystery texture blend in an old house?

Man, that takes me back. My grandma's place had this one wall where the texture looked like cottage cheese mixed with gravel. We never did figure out what they used. Ended up scraping the whole section and redoing it with a stomp brush. Sometimes the old stuff is just a lost cause.

Cottage cheese and gravel is a perfect way to put it, @ray_williams.

Try a little joint compound mixed with fine sand, that’s usually the old school texture.
