Ran into a retired installer at the hardware store who gave me a tip on corner bead

He saw me picking up some standard vinyl bead and said, 'Kid, for outside corners on a rental, you're better off with paper-faced metal. It'll survive a door slam.' I'd never even considered the difference for high-traffic areas. What's your go-to for corners that need to take a beating?

Wait, you didn't know about paper-faced metal?

What if the door slams into the wall itself and not just the corner? That metal bead can still dent and then you've got a sharp edge poking through... seems like a different kind of problem. I've had way more luck just using the heavy vinyl stuff and making sure the mud job is solid. It gives a little and bounces back.

Yeah, that sharp edge is a real safety hazard too.

Ha, yeah I've definitely learned that lesson the hard way myself. I once cut my knuckle on a sharp metal bead and bled all over my fresh drywall mud, real fun cleanup. Pretty sure my home repair skills peaked at "painting over mistakes.
