Uncle Ray said to hang wet tape on green mud, got a call back in 3 weeks.
He swore it saved time on new construction. Ceiling tape peeled off in a strip down the hallway. Anybody else have old timers give advice that backfired?

Hang on, is this really that deep of a problem? I mean, tape peels off sometimes, it happens. Operator error or not, Uncle Rays magic trick clearly has a pretty small window of working perfectly. Seems like a lot of people are overthinking a simple drywall fix. If it was that easy, everyone would be doing it and nobody would have callbacks. Is it worth all this back and forth or can we just move on to mudding the next room?

Uncle Ray's tip works fine if you actually know what you're doing. Green mud has a specific moisture level and you gotta check it before hanging anything. Tape peeling off means the mud wasn't dry enough or the tape wasn't embedded right. I've done the wet tape on green mud method for years on commercial jobs and never had a callback. Sounds like operator error more than bad advice. Maybe try pressing the tape in with a 6 inch knife instead of just laying it on top next time.

I saw a thread from a drywall supplier that said the key is using paper tape instead of mesh for green mud. Something about the fibers bonding better when it's still damp. Could be worth a shot if the tape's been lifting on you.
