The "second passport as backup plan" thing is actually real for me now
I used to roll my eyes at people who said dual citizenship was just a hedge for when things go south. Then my company in London announced layoffs in March and I had 2 weeks to figure out my visa situation. My Italian passport meant I could just walk into any EU job market without paperwork. My US passport would have been useless for that. Has anyone else had a moment where their "backup" passport actually saved them from a mess?

@pat781 nailed it, the cost of my Italian passport was just paperwork fees, but it saved me from moving back in with my parents.

Heard a podcast where someone said that's exactly what happened to them...

A second option completely changes how you handle a messy situation" - that line hits hard. But I gotta ask, what kind of backup plan are we talking about here? Like a second citizenship or passport, or more like a rental property in a different country? Cause those are two totally different levels of commitment and cost. Seems like the podcast person must have had a pretty specific setup if it actually saved them. Would love to know what they said about how much it cost them upfront versus what they ended up needing it for.

Yeah that podcast was probably onto something because the whole "just in case" mindset is way more common now than people admit. Having that second option completely changes how you handle a messy situation like sudden layoffs or visa trouble. It's wild how something you get for family reasons can end up being the single most useful thing you own.
