Had a real scare with a vintage amp in my shop last Friday

I was testing a restored 1970s tube amp for a client in Seattle. The power transformer started humming loud and got too hot to touch in under a minute. I cut the power right away and found a short in the primary winding from some old, cracked insulation. I had to order a new Hammond 272FX transformer, which set the repair back a week. What's your go-to move when a classic piece of gear has a dangerous fault like that?

Actually, Hammond is the brand, not the model.

Man, that kind of correction just sucks the air right out of a room. Feels like getting your hand slapped for a tiny mistake. We all knew what they meant, right? Some folks just gotta be the smartest person in the thread.

Gotta push back a little here @ivan_murphy80, I actually like when people point out small stuff like that. It helps me learn the difference between brand names and model numbers, you know? And I'd rather get corrected than keep saying the wrong thing forever without knowing it.

So you cut the power right away, what tipped you off first?
