Update: Data recovery without permission is a BAD idea

I used to think grabbing ALL data was just part of the job. But a client was FURIOUS I saw their texts without asking. Now I get a signed OK before I even power on the device.

Remember when I found my dad's old love letters? Yikes.

Finding your dad's love letters sounds like a special kind of awkward. Paulw53's lawyer friend is onto something, because that's basically a home version of data recovery gone wrong. You're just looking for a missing photo and suddenly you're reading about your parents' date at the mini-golf place.

A lawyer friend once pointed out that data recovery can break more than one person's privacy. You grab all the data and end up reading texts from someone's mom or boss who never agreed to it. @annajenkins talked about changing her mind, and she's right, we focus on the client but forget the other people in those messages. Getting that signed paper is step one, but maybe we should also ask what specific files we're even looking for. Digging through everything just because we can is a quick way to lose trust for good.
