Old timer at the union hall told me I was riding the safeties too hard

He said I was slamming the car into the limits every time instead of feathering the final approach, and it took me about a week of retraining my hand to feel the difference. Now my stops are butter smooth and I'm not replacing guide shoes every six months. Any of you guys ever get a piece of advice that made you completely change your technique?

Man that "feathering the final approach" thing really clicked for me too. I used to punch the brakes hard at the last second and my passengers would lurch forward every time. Once I started easing into it like the old guys showed me, the ride got way smoother and I stopped wearing out my pads so fast.

Easing into everything makes life easier. Brakes, decisions, relationships.

And something else I noticed about that technique, @king.val, is how it changes your whole approach to the intersection. Instead of focusing on the stop line itself, you start looking way further ahead at the bigger picture. You're planning your slowdown based on what the car in front of you is doing, not just reacting to the red light at the last second. That kind of forward thinking carries over to other parts of driving too. It made me a lot more aware of the whole flow of traffic, not just my own car's immediate stopping point.
