Skipping breakfast before shoeing is a mistake, here's why

Many farriers rush out without eating to get more done. I thought that was the way for a long time. Then I passed out cold lifting a hoof. Doctor said low blood sugar from no food. Now I always have a bite first and my energy stays steady.

Your body clearly handles it better than mine did. I just need that small bit of food to keep from crashing. We all have to figure out what works for our own system.

Reading about you passing out... that sounds rough. But I've always skipped breakfast before shoeing and never had a problem. My energy is actually higher when I don't eat first thing. A bit of coffee and lots of water gets me through the morning jobs. Eating makes me feel heavy and slow, which is no good when you're bending over all day. For some folks food is fuel, but for me it's the opposite... I need to work hungry.

Yeah, I totally get that. I used to force myself to eat breakfast before early shifts and felt so slow. Now I just have a piece of fruit or some nuts if I'm really hungry. It makes a huge difference in how alert I feel.

I used to skip it too, but passing out changed my mind real quick.
