Watched a new client try to pick their own hoof for 20 minutes before I got there
They were using a dull, rusty hoof knife from a general hardware store and kept scraping at the sole instead of the wall. I showed them my Diamond double-edged nippers and how to properly clean the commissures, which saved us both a ton of time and frustration. How do you guys handle owners who want to help but are using the totally wrong tools?

Ngl, you sound like a gatekeeper. A person trying to care for their own animal is a good thing. That old knife might be rusty but it's what they have, and they're making an effort. Your fancy nippers are great for a pro, but telling someone their basic tool is "totally wrong" just makes them feel dumb for trying. Maybe instead of showing off your gear, you could have just shown them the right motion with what they already owned. Not everyone can afford the pro stuff right away.

Honestly, I've been that person trying to use a butter knife as a screwdriver, so I get it. My first hoof pick was a repurposed can opener, which did more harm than good. Sometimes you don't know what you don't know until you make a mess of it.
