A customer in Boise asked me why I always start with the corner post first.

I was setting up a cedar fence line for them, about 150 feet total. They just came out and said, 'My dad always put the end posts in last, said it let him adjust the whole run.' I explained my method is to get that corner perfectly square and build off it. But it got me thinking, maybe I'm too rigid. Has anyone else changed their starting point on a job and had it work better?

So when you set that first corner post, how do you actually check it's square? Do you use the 3-4-5 method off the house or just a big framing square? I've seen guys get that post perfect, only to find the property line itself isn't square to anything.

That bit about the property line not being square is the real problem. I used to start with the house too, until I had to redo a whole section. Now I run a string line down the actual property line first, no matter what it looks like.

Honestly seems like a lot of work for a fence post.

Yeah, that property line thing is a real headache.
