Finally hit 500 linear feet of cedar fence in a single week

That's a new personal best for me, and it felt good to see the whole line go up so clean. Anyone else find they work faster with a certain type of wood?

Yeah thomas_sanchez is right about the weight, but cedar can actually split pretty bad if you're not careful. I've found you gotta use ring shank nails or screws, especially on the ends, or it'll just pop right open on you. That straight grain is nice until it decides to run away from you.

So ring shanks are the real trick, huh?

Damn, 500 feet in a week is moving. Cedar is nice to work with because it's so much lighter than pressure treated pine, feels like you can just fly through it. The straight grain and lack of knots in clear cedar makes every cut and nail go faster too. Hard to beat that smell all day, even if it gets pricey.

Oh man, you're so right about cedar. I built a planter box last fall with it and it was like butter. The saw just glides through, and you don't fight the boards when you're trying to line them up. That smell is the best part, makes the whole garage smell amazing for weeks. Don't you find it splits way less than pine when you're nailing close to the end?
