I finally understood why old timers always check the frost line

Was putting in a cedar fence in Duluth last November, hit what I thought was solid ground... until the first hard freeze. Woke up to three posts leaning like drunks. The frost heave was a solid 4 feet down. Anyone else in a cold climate have a go-to depth they swear by?

My uncle in Fargo always digs five feet for posts, no exceptions.

Your uncle @claire_davis31 would laugh at my two-foot holes.

Man, I go six inches deeper than the local frost line every time.
