I was setting posts with a 4-inch gap from the property line for 8 years until a surveyor in Austin told me the code is 6 inches.

My neighbor's fence got flagged for being five inches off in Dallas.

Oh wow, that's a scary thought. Makes you wonder how many other little rules like that are buried in the code books that nobody really knows. A lot of fence crews just go by what they were taught, not what the actual city paperwork says. You could have a whole block built wrong and nobody would know until someone sells their house and a survey happens.

@ivan774 that's exactly what I'm saying! My neighbor's pool fence was like 8 inches off the property line in back and nobody caught it for like 7 years until they tried to sell the house. The buyer's survey guy flagged it and it turned into this whole mess with permits and the city and a $900 fix. And the worst part is the guy who built it said "that's how we always do it" when they asked him about it. So yeah, @ivan774 you're totally right - there's probably tons of little code stuff that just gets passed down wrong and nobody checks unless something goes wrong.
