That pinky promise thing @the_drew mentioned is spot on. It's funny how bosses have these little rituals for their trade secrets. My old foreman had a specific way to brace a corner post with just two stakes and a cross-tie before the concrete even sets. He'd make you watch him do it twice, then you had to do it under his eye. It wasn't about being sneaky, it was about making sure the method stayed correct and the work stayed clean. Those tricks become the standard for a whole crew.
