Overheard a homeowner say 'fences are just boards and nails' last Tuesday
Made me laugh and then think about all the hours I've spent digging post holes in rocky soil or squaring gates that swing perfectly. How do you explain to someone that the ground conditions alone can double a job's time?

Fences are just boards and nails." Sure, and a car is just bolts and moving parts until you're laying on your back in the dirt trying to get a rusted one loose. Whoever said that never had a single rock fight them back while hand-digging a hole. Or tried to hang a gate on a slope and realized geometry is a lot meaner than they thought. It's the kind of statement you can only make if you've never actually built a fence yourself.

Fair point, but sometimes you just need something to keep the neighbors' dog out of your flowerbeds.

Ngl, I once spent three hours adjusting a gate latch on a hill, only to realize I had the whole thing upside down. The boards and nails didn't help with that.
