Skipping the call to 811 is a gamble I'm tired of seeing
Last month, a homeowner insisted they knew where all the utilities were. We started digging and nicked a gas line, which was a huge scare. In my experience, even if you think you're clear, calling 811 is a must-do. It set the project back three days and added hundreds to the cost. Your mileage may vary, but I've seen this happen too many times. Take this with a grain of salt, but it's a safety issue first and foremost. I wish more people understood the risk.

Seeing that gamble with 811 calls reminds me of how often people cut corners on safety stuff to save time. @young.caleb is right that it's free and easy, but it's part of a bigger trend where folks ignore simple steps until something goes wrong. Honestly, it's just not worth the risk when a quick call can prevent a disaster.

Seriously, calling 811 should be your first move before any digging. I've seen too many close calls that turned into expensive fixes. Why risk it when the service is free and easy?

Totally agree with both points here, especially what @max_brown said about it being part of a bigger trend. It's like how people will skip checking their smoke detector battery or ignore a weird car noise for months. That free call to 811 is just another one of those simple safety steps that gets brushed aside until you hit a gas line and your whole afternoon gets real exciting, real fast.
