Update: My neighbor's 'free' pallet wood fence versus my treated pine one
He built his whole back line with old shipping pallets he got for nothing, said it was a steal. After one rainy season here in Atlanta, his is leaning like a funhouse mirror and half the boards are splitting. Mine, using standard 4x4 treated posts and 1x6 pine, still looks straight as an arrow. Has anyone else seen a 'creative' material choice go this bad this fast?

Watched my cousin use old bed slats for a tomato trellis. They snapped under the first heavy fruit, total collapse. Sometimes free just means you're the test run for a bad idea.

My own creative material low point was trying to use old vinyl siding as a garden bed border. It looked okay for a week, then the first hot day it melted into these sad, wavy strips. My yard looked like a Dali painting. I admire the optimism, but sometimes the boring way is the right way.

That "creative material choice" is a lesson I learned the hard way too. I tried using old barn wood for a shed once and it warped so bad the door wouldn't close. Now I just stick with the boring, pressure-treated stuff that actually lasts.
