My coworker got let go after a weekend Facebook post about our boss

He posted a picture from a bar last Saturday with a caption calling our manager a 'clueless jerk' for a project change. On Monday, HR showed him the post and said it violated the social media policy. They gave him a choice: delete it and apologize in a team meeting, or be fired. He refused to apologize, saying it was his personal page. They walked him out that afternoon. Do you think companies should fire people for venting about work online, even if it's on a personal account?

The real question is whether that social media policy was ever actually shared with the team beforehand.

Reminds me of when my old roommate got written up for a tweet about his boss. He posted something like "my manager thinks he's a genius but can't figure out the coffee machine" and somehow HR pulled that up during a meeting. Policy was buried in some employee handbook nobody ever read. Thing is, he got a warning not fired, so depends on the company I guess. Some places just look for any excuse to trim the fat.

Calling him a "clueless jerk" was dumb, but getting fired for a personal post feels way too harsh.

My buddy got canned for something similar last year.
