My old coworker got let go over a joke he posted about our boss

This happened about three months ago at my pest control company. We had a really tough day dealing with a huge wasp nest in a Charlotte attic, and my coworker, Dave, posted a picture of his sweaty gear with a caption joking that our boss would probably send us back out for 'just one more' job at midnight. It was clearly just venting after a hard day. Our boss saw it, called Dave into the office the next morning, and fired him on the spot for 'damaging company morale'. I thought it was way too harsh, especially since Dave was a good worker and never named the boss directly. The whole thing has made me really nervous about posting anything work-related online now. Has anyone else seen a firing over a social media post that felt totally unfair?

Can we all just agree with @kaigibson that this fear is the real morale killer?

It's a dangerous new norm where bosses can fire you for a bad mood posted online. The real damage to morale comes from that kind of fear, not a dumb joke. We're all just one vague post away from being Dave now.

Ugh, exactly. I just keep my work stuff locked down tight, separate account with no real name. @jessej23 gets it, that fear is worse than any joke.
