That quiet guy in accounting got canned for a 5-year-old post

We had this dude named Phil who barely talked to anyone. Kept his head down, did his spreadsheets, never caused trouble. Some intern dug up a crude joke Phil posted on Twitter back in 2019 and HR decided it violated the new social media policy. They let him go on a Thursday afternoon, no warning, no chance to delete it. The joke was stupid but not hateful, just that lazy edgy humor everyone used back then. It made me realize how many of us have old posts that could get torched with a different boss or a different week. Has anyone else seen someone lose a job over something ancient like that?

Did you try just searching your own username on a site like Wayback Machine? I did that a few years ago and found a dumb take I left on a forum back in 2016, nothing hateful just cringey hot take stuff. I scrubbed anything I could find and set up a Google alert for my name to catch any new stuff. It took a few hours but gave me some peace of mind, even if I probably missed stuff.

His head down, did his spreadsheets" - that's rough. Best thing anyone can do now is go through and delete anything older than 2-3 years that isn't boring or work safe. Most people don't remember what they posted back then anyway.

River and I have both posted dumb stuff that never mattered much in the real world.
