That time I got fired for a tweet about our CEO's new car
I posted a joke about my boss spending $80k on a Tesla while we were all getting 2% raises. HR called me in the next morning and told me I was let go for 'negative social media conduct.' The whole thing took about 45 minutes from the tweet to getting my box of desk stuff. I wasn't even trying to be mean, just frustrated with how things were going. Has anyone else had a boss with thin skin like that?

Legal trouble ahead since they documented the firing reason.

My buddy got fired from a retail chain last year and they put "poor performance" in his file without any specifics. He tried to fight it for unemployment and lost because they had that paper showing a reason, even though it was vague. It's like companies learned to just document something, anything, even if it's flimsy, because that paperwork carries weight in legal situations. People don't realize how often that one piece of paper decides the outcome before you even get a chance to tell your side.

Honestly, the key is to never leave without a written response of your own. Your friend should've sent an email right after that meeting saying, "I'm confused about the poor performance claim since I never got any warnings or a chance to improve." That creates your own paper trail. Companies bank on you not fighting back in writing. Next time, tell him to get everything in email form before he walks out the door. It's the only way to counter that flimsy documentation.
