Got a reality check from a McDonald's shift manager yesterday that changed how I see my first job
I was complaining to this older guy named Mark at the bus stop about my manager micromanaging my register speed at the grocery store. He just looked at me and said 'kid, I've worked 12 years at McDonald's and learned the hard way that if you burn out trying to please everyone, you'll be replaced in a week.' Then he told me he makes $15.50 an hour after all that time, and suddenly my $10.50 job with a jerk boss didn't seem worth losing sleep over. Has anyone else had a random stranger put your job drama in perspective like that?

@kim_ramirez3 nailed it when she said those jobs bank on you thinking it's your whole identity, doesn't she? Once you zoom out and see the bigger picture, you realize almost every workplace runs on that same trick - convincing you their little dramas matter more than your own peace of mind. It's like the whole system is designed to make you forget you're just trading time for money, not your soul for a pat on the back.

That Mark guy basically told you the unspoken truth nobody wants to admit. Those first jobs are designed to break you in, not break you down mentally. The thing that stands out to me is how he framed it as a lesson about being replaceable. Most people argue about wages or bad bosses, but the real issue is that companies bank on young workers thinking their job is their whole identity. Once you realize you're just a number on a schedule, the stress about register speed or a mean manager loses its power. He did you a favor by showing you the math doesn't add up to caring that much.

The part nobody talks about is how these jobs actually teach you to lie on a resume... you start out caring about every little thing, but after a few months you learn to talk about your time there in a way that makes it sound way more important than it really was. Like saying you "managed inventory flow" when you really just stocked shelves and tried not to get yelled at by a department manager named Kevin. That disconnect between what you actually do and what you learn to describe it as is where the real lesson is. It's not that you're replaceable, it's that the whole system is built on pretending you're part of something bigger when you're really just a body filling a slot until the next kid walks in the door.
